James and Sarah Lydeamore (nee Berry) who were married at Gumeracha in 1866 lived for a while at South Rhine. They had six sons, Samuel (born 1868), James (1871), David (1873), George (1875), Daniel (1877), and Amos (1879). The first two boys, Samuel and James, were born while they lived at South Rhine. The other four children were born after they had moved to the Sedan/Towitta area in the early 1870s.
Their eldest son Samuel lived for only a few days and is buried here at South Rhine Cemetery. Their fifth son, Daniel who was born in 1877 after they had moved to Towitta died in 1879 at 16 months of age. It was initially thought that he may have been buried in the same grave as Samuel. However, his place of death is recorded as Towitta and he is listed on the Towitta Burial Register.
James Snr who had been farming at Black Hill near Sedan died in 1889 at the age of 71. While there has been some suggestion he may have been buried at South Rhine, this seems unlikely as they had moved from the district over 15 years before. His widow Sarah moved to Mannum in the 1890s to be near children and grandchildren and was there for the rest of her life. She died in 2013 aged 76 and is buried in West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide.
Research Note: The age of 35 recorded on James’ marriage record is incorrect. He was born in 1818, and would have been 48 when he married.
