Matthew known as Matt, fifth child of John McCallum and Mary nee McKenzie was born on 15 November 1876 at South Rhine.

Matthew married Lucy Burton on the 24 April 1907 at her parents’ home at Belalie East. Lucy was born in 1873.

Matthew and Lucy had one daughter Thelma Marian McCallum born on  11 August 1911.

Matt McCallum owned approx 700 acres at South Rhine, this being Sections 94, 96, 97, 98, 100,103 and Pt sec 91 and Pt sec 454. On one of these sections he had a golf links which was readily used by the community.

Matt and Lucy were members of the South Rhine Presbyterian Church.

Matt was a foundation member of the Springton Progress Associations Committee with Jim and Peter Miller, Herb Rohrlach, Fred Rattei, Heine Graetz, Ross and Bill Forrest.

Lucy died 1 March 1969 aged 96 years

Matt died 22 September 1969 aged 92 years. They are both buried at the South Rhine Cemetery
