Keith and Rhoda French

Henry Keith French (known as Keith) was born on the 19 March 1909 to John Herbert French and Susan French (nee Saint) at Willochra, South Australia and resided at The Peppers Willochra.

Rhoda Nicholson French (nee Parker) was born on the 24 February 1920 to Reverend Howard Ludford Parker and Alice May Parker (nee Collison) in Adelaide.  Rhoda’s father was a Congregational minister and the family lived at various places in South Australia including Port Elliot for a number of years.

In 1940 Rhoda went to Willochra to teach and met Keith at church and various other functions around Willochra.  They married on the 20 June 1942 in Adelaide and returned to Willochra to live with Keith’s parents at The Peppers.

David Norman French was born on the 28 February 1944.

The Peppers was sold in 1946 and Keith, Rhoda and David moved to Adelaide and lived with Rhoda’s parents at Unley Park. Keith worked for an uncle while he looked for a suitable property to buy.

In December 1948 they moved to Jutland Road, Springton. 

Cynthia Anne French was born on the 15 March 1949 and Robert John French on 18 March 1950.

Keith, Rhoda and family worked together on their property running sheep, dairy cows, and growing grapes, apricots and occasionally cropping.

Keith played cricket and Rhoda played tennis for Springton and in later years Keith played bowls at Mt Pleasant.  Keith was also very involved in the Masonic Lodge in Mt Pleasant and Gawler.

Keith, Rhoda and the family attended the Eden Valley Congregational Church where Keith was an Elder of the Church and Rhoda the organist.

In 1956 Rhoda began teaching Grades 1, 2 and 3 at Springton Primary School and continued until 1971 when she moved to Adelaide.

On the 31 July 1969 Keith was killed in a car accident near Keyneton.

In 1971 Rhoda moved to Walkerville and began teaching at Holden Hill Primary School where she only taught for about 3 weeks.  Rhoda suffered an aneurysm and was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. During the operation she suffered a stroke and became paralysed on the right side of her body and was also unable to speak. She spent many weeks in hospital, then moved to a nursing home in St Peters and then to the Masonic Village Nursing Home at Somerton Park where she continued her rehabilitation.  She learnt to walk again with the aid of a quad walking stick and to talk again.  Rhoda lived in the Masonic Village Nursing Home for 22 years until she passed away on the 15 June 1992.
