Edward, known as “Ted”, the seventh child of Peter and Janet Miller was born at Glen Para, Mt Crawford on the 27 May 1859 and came to Braeside as a baby. He grew up at there and helped with the farm work. A list of all children in the family is here.
Edward married Eva Mary Goodes (whose parents were George Goodes and Annie Goodes nee Corner) on 28 July 1915 at the home of her parents Monkswood, Keyneton. Edward was 56 years of age and Eva 43 when they married.
Edward and Eva went to live on Section 111 in the Hundred of South Rhine, on property which he and his brother David had purchased in 1910 from John Runnals Sibley. Sibley was the son-in-law of John and Eliza Dowden who had taken up that land in the 1850s.
Edward and Eva named the property Leabrook. It was later known as Millford.
Edward worked the family farm with his brother David. In 1905 sections 105, 106, 114, 118 and 127 were transferred to them from their father before his death in 1906. Prior to Edward’s marriage in 1915 they split their joint holdings with Edward taking sections 111, 106 and 127 and David taking sections 105, 114 and 118. Edward subsequently sold section 127 (Hasties) in 1921 to his cousins John and Peter Lyddon, sons of Betsy Lyddon / Sinclair nee Chalmers. He inherited Sections 69 and 70 from his Uncle Will in 1922 and sold them in 1923.
Edward and David were known as breeders of good draught horses. It is recorded that in 1905 they bought a horse called Sir John for ₤325-0-0, a lot of money at the time.
Edward was a councillor on the South Rhine District Council 1908-1925, and held the office of Chairman 1915-1919.
Edward and Eva did not have any children.
Edward died on the 13 June 1925*, aged 66 years, and Eva died on the 16 Dec 1927*, aged 55 years, both buried in the South Rhine Cemetery.
* On the headstone it states that Edward died in 1926 and Eva died on the 16 December 1927 but cross referencing with Jack Miller’s diaries, Edward died in 1925 and Eva died on the 15 December 1927
