Murray Herring

Thomas Howard Murray Herring was born on  3 May 1903 at North West Bend station near Morgan SA. His parents were Thomas Henry Herring and Mary Elizabeth “Polly” Jackman. The Jackman’s had come to South Australia when Mary was 9 years old from Cornwall, England. Mary, known as “Polly” was the governess at “Ivanhoe” for the Evans family at Keyneton. The Evans family had a place at Morgan to go and enjoy the river and this is where met.

Murray’s father (Thomas Henry Herring) moved the family to Minlaton where he became  the Funeral Director.  Murray subsequently joined his father’s business and was also a Funeral Director at Minlaton. Murray married Hannah Christina May Jones on  2 Nov 1929 at the Methodist parsonage, Minlaton.

Murray and May  had two children June and John. May’s daughter, Maureen born in 1923, was adopted by Murray and took the Herring name.

Murray and May moved to Eden Valley in 1964. Murray had been to Keyneton in his younger years to see relations, his mother’s sister Annie had married Frederick Evans and lived at “Kenilworth”, Keyneton and Murray longed to return to this area.

Their son John left the Bank of Adelaide in Adelaide to join his parents on the farm they had purchased. They developed a dairy as the main income.

Murray and May were involved in the Eden Valley Congregational church and also the South Rhine Presbyterian church.

Murray died on  5 July 1988 aged 85 years.

May Herring

Hannah Christina May Jones was born on 11 July 1906 to parents Samuel Jones and Hannah nee Murdoch at Levens, a property near Pt Turton, Hardwicke Bay on Yorke Peninsula. May’s great grandmother’s family, the Tonkin’s, emigrated from a village named St Levens, Cornwall, England when she was a child.

Samuel Jones was one of 21 children surviving to adulthood, born to William and Diana Jones of Delamere, SA.

 May died on 9 January 1997 aged 90 years.
