Clara Bartlett was the eldest of four daughters born to Edwin and Christiane Bartlett (nee Roy). Edwin Bartlett and Christiane Lydia Roy were married on 27 April 1864 at the Eden Valley Lutheran Church . They lived at South Rhine and Edwin worked for Thomas Matthews in his dairy. The four daughters were Clara, born in 1865, Julia (1866), Alwine (1868) and Edeth (1870)
Clara died on 17 January 1867 shortly before her second birthday. It appears that the family left the district in the 1870s and possibly moved interstate. There are no further registrations of births, deaths or marriages for them in South Australia.
Note: In the birth and marriage records for the family, Christiane’s name is also variously recorded as Christiana, Christena, and Christenia.
Research note:
This grave does not have a headstone. Possibly there would initially have been a wooden cross that has not survived the elements. In the 1990s markers were added to unmarked graves recording such information as was available from curator’s records. These would have been transferred across the decades mostly in handwritten form. The burial register for the cemetery has not survived.
There are known to be some errors in the names on these markers, including spelling errors. This grave was labelled “The Barrett Family” Our research has not been able to identify a Barrett family living in the district in the 1860s. However a Bartlett family worked for Thomas Matthews in his dairy and it seems likely there is a spelling error,
Edwin and Christiane Bartlett had a daughter, Clara, born in 1865 who died at South Rhine in 1867. There is no apparent reference to the burial of a Bartlett in any of the surrounding cemeteries. It seems likely that this grave is Clara.
