The South Rhine Cemetery is a small private pioneer cemetery providing for the former members of the South Rhine Presbyterian (later Uniting) Church and their families. The earliest graves date back to the 1860s.  The cemetery contains graves of district pioneers, including some families whose descendants are still being interred there. Here is an overview

Land for the cemetery was given by James Shearer and sits on a little rise at 345 Shearer’s Rd. While a rocky rise is not the ideal ground for a cemetery it provides a peaceful pastoral setting. The cemetery is about 4 km from Springton, off the road to  Eden Valley Road.  Title information can be found here link to title.

The cemetery is managed and maintained on behalf of the Uniting Church (SA) by the Friends of the South Rhine Cemetery Society.

The cemetery is included on the local heritage register, administered by the Barossa District Council

We are keen to hear from anyone interested to help in the care and support of the cemetery.  We are also pleased to help anyone interested in researching family and district history.
